To permanently import a vehicle into Mexico, it must meet the following conditions:

Restriction Requirement

🔞 Vehicle Age Must be 5–10 years old from the current year. For 2025, eligible models are 2015–2020.

🏷️ VIN Origin VIN must begin with a number (1–5), meaning the vehicle was made in USA, Canada, or Mexico.

🔧 Condition No salvage, rebuilt, or damaged vehicles allowed.

📄 Emissions Compliance Must comply with Mexican environmental standards. Testing may be required.

🛑 Prohibited Vehicles No military, armored, oversized (e.g., dump trucks), or racing vehicles.

🏙️ Destination Zones Permanent imports are allowed only in border zones or authorized states unless vehicle is registered nationally.

⏳ Temporary Import (Tourists, Expats & Temporary Residents)

If you’re a foreign tourist, student, or temporary resident, you may temporarily import a vehicle for personal use:

• 📅 Permit Validity: Up to 180 days, or duration of visa/residency.

• 🚙 Any vehicle type is eligible, but must exit Mexico before permit expiration.

• 💰 Bond (Guarantee Deposit): Required and refundable upon vehicle exit. Amount depends on vehicle age.

• 🚫 Not for sale or commercial use in Mexico.

• 📍 Restricted to certain states (especially outside border zones).
