Chile has strict regulations on the import of vehicles to protect its environment and economy. Here's what you need to know:

• Used vehicles are generally NOT permitted for import into Chile unless you meet specific exceptions:

  • Returning Chilean residents who have lived abroad for more than 12 months

  • Diplomats or foreign officials

  • Vehicles for mining or industrial use in special zones (e.g., Zona Franca in Iquique)

  • Classic cars (over 30 years old) for collectors – subject to approval

Certain free trade zones have different rules:

• Zona Franca de Iquique (Zofri) and Zona Franca de Punta Arenas allow import of used vehicles for use within those zones only.

• Vehicles imported under these conditions are not allowed to circulate in the rest of Chile without re-registration and full import taxes.
