✅ Permitted Imports:

• New Vehicles: Allowed without restrictions.

• Used Vehicles: Allowed under specific conditions (see below).

• Motorcycles: Can be imported with fewer restrictions than cars.

• Classic or Collector Vehicles: May qualify for exemptions if properly documented.

Occasionally, the Uruguayan government bans the import of certain food products and pet food containing prohibited ingredients, especially those originating from regions restricted by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Completely prohibited items include:

• 🎨 Paint with excess lead

• 🐞 Organic chlorine-based insecticides

• 🍞 Potassium bromate (used in food)

• 🚗 Used cars

• 🧱 Asbestos and products containing asbestos

• 🌱 Certain insecticides and herbicides

• Must be 10 years old or newer from the date of manufacture.

• Must be in good mechanical condition and pass inspection (no salvage or damaged vehicles).

• Must meet Uruguayan safety and environmental standards.

Uruguay eliminated import quotas in the mid-1970s and significantly reduced non-tariff barriers, including reference and minimum import prices, during the 1990s.

• Reference prices were abolished in 1994.

• Remaining minimum export prices were removed in 2002.

• Left-hand drive vehicles are standard in Uruguay — right-hand drive imports are not generally allowed.

• Imported vehicles may be subject to inspection by Uruguayan customs at the port.

• Cars imported under temporary residence may qualify for exemptions.

• Uruguay enforces non-automatic import licensing for specific products, such as:

  • 🏗 Steel for structural use

  Important:

  • Importers must request licenses before the product’s arrival to avoid demurrage costs at ports of entry.
