If you're planning to ship goods to Colombia, it's critical to understand the country's import restrictions and licensing requirements. Below is a summary of the prohibited items, controlled substances, and import regulations you must comply with.

Colombia has strict regulations on importing vehicles — especially used cars. Import rules vary by vehicle type, age, and the importer’s status (individual, diplomat, company, etc.).

📆 1. Age Restrictions

🚗 Passenger Vehicles Only new (0–2 years old) allowed for private importers

🚛 Trucks & Commercial Vehicles Up to 10 years old for commercial use (with approval)

🏍️ Motorcycles Must be brand new (0 km) and meet regulations

🚗 Antique/classic cars (older than 35 years)

🚫 Used cars are generally prohibited for importation by private individuals.

👤 2. Who Can Import Vehicles

• ✅ Private Individuals can import new vehicles only

• ✅ Diplomats, returning Colombians, and foreign investors may get exceptions

• ✅ Companies and importers with commercial licenses can import certain used vehicles for fleet or resale, with pre-authorization

🔄 3. Steering Orientation

• Only left-hand drive (LHD) vehicles are allowed

• 🚫 Right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles are strictly prohibited

The following products are strictly banned from importation:

• Pesticides and chemicals such as:

  • Dieldrin, Aldrin, Chlordane, Endosulfan, Heptachlor, Lindane

  • Any product containing these substances

• Lead-based gasoline (containing tetraethyl lead)

• Weapon-style toys, including:

  • Toy guns, decorative weapons, and jewelry weapons

• Cash letters and negotiable bonds

Some products require special permits or conditions before entering Colombia:

• Electronic cigarettes / vapes

  • May only be shipped with an International Special Commodities (ISC) contract)

• Jewelry (including gold, silver, and gemstones)

  • Must enter under formal customs procedures

  • Informal entry may result in shipment seizure

• Consumable goods (for human use)

  • May require INVIMA approval (Colombia’s health regulatory agency)

Colombia enforces import licensing for over 100 subcategories in its national tariff schedule.

No import licenses are granted for:

• Used vehicles and vehicle parts

• Used or retreaded tires

• Used clothing, closeouts, or irregular garments

• Used bags, sacks made of vegetable fibers

• Rags and textile scrap materials

• Products manufactured in Iran (due to current embargo restrictions)
